The NIKE 5K and NIKE 5K For Kids 1 Mile returns to Miami encouraging activity among youth and to raise funds for individual schools in Miami-Dade County. The second annual race will be held Saturday, November 17 at the Shops at Sunset Place. Begun in Honolulu in 2000, the success of this community event expanded to Las Vegas, Atlanta and Denver in 2006 and Boston, Miami, Portland and Seattle in 2007. In all, these events have raised nearly $850,000 for schools across the United States.
Unlike other fundraising runs, 100 percent of the entry fee will be donated to a school Physical Education (PE) play and athletic program of each entrant’s choice. This provides students and their families the opportunity to raise funds for physical education and playground equipment for their schools. The race is a part of Nike’s Let Me Play initiative, a global commitment to support programs and efforts that help youth unleash their potential through sport.
For the participants, the top finishers in each age division will receive awards, however the biggest winners of the day will be the schools that directly benefit from the money raised.
The NIKE 5K For Kids 1-Mile Run/Walk option for kids and participating parents will take kids on a healthy trip around South Miami. Finishers age 18 and under will receive a finishers medal and a Nike gift bag of gear to help keep them active.
The entry fee is $15, which is donated to a 501(c)3 school, plus an additional $5 for a NIKE 5K For Kids t-shirt. Entry forms are available at NIKETOWN at the Shops at Sunset Place.
