Glass Collecting Expert Appearing at the
West Palm Beach Antique & Collectibles Show

In an age of plastic, it’s easy to overlook the significance glass has played on our history. Whether created for beauty or function, each piece is a reflection of its era and the society that made it. This month, Kyle Husfloen will be discussing the long-running practice of glass collecting in a free presentation at the West Palm Beach Antique & Collectibles Show, held at the South Florida Fairgrounds, July 1 - 3, 2005.
Husfloen is a columnist and the editor of Antique Trader’s Antique & Collectibles Price Guide. He has more than 30 years’ experience as an antiques appraiser, lecturer, and glass collector. In his presentation, “The State of Glass Collecting: What's Hot and What's Not,” Husfloen will be discussing modern trends in an age old hobby.
Glass was first produced in Mesopotamia at around 3000 B.C. In the centuries since, it has undergone many transformations and new uses. From windows, to eyeglasses, to drinking utensils, costume jewelry, random pieces of art, and countless other things, there are few professions or artistic mediums that have not made significant strides from the use of glass. But it’s not a fondness for the rich history of glass that fuels the passion of most collectors.
“People tend to collect things they can relate to,” says Husfloen, “Items they knew from their mother’s house or grandmother’s house.”
But as more and more plastic overshadows the use of glass in common household items, the future of glass collecting is changing. To find out more, attend this informative seminar.
The West Palm Beach Antique & Collectibles show is presented the first weekend of every month by dmg world media. It attracts hundreds of antique and collectible dealers who feature items including antique furniture, china, silver, glassware, jewelry, linens, fine art, kitchenalia, toys and dolls, decorative accessories, fine collectibles, and much more. As a service to its patrons and dealers, each show offers a free lecture series that highlights experts speaking and answering questions on informative and hot topics for buyers.
The show is held at the South Florida Fairgrounds Expo Center, located at 9067 Southern Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Florida. Admission is $11 for a multi-day pass, $6.50 for a one-day pass, $5.50 for seniors and children under 12 are free. Seminars and parking are free with show admission. Show hours: Friday, 12-5pm, Saturday, 9am–5pm and Sunday, 10am–4:30pm. Seminar dates/times: Saturday and Sunday, 12pm and 3pm.

All Tenet South Florida Hospitals Enhance Quality Care
by Implementing American Heart Association’s Get With The GuidelinesSM–Coronary Artery Disease Program
Tenet South Florida has announced that all 14 of its acute care hospitals were among the 17 hospitals in the tri-county area to have received recognition from the American Heart Association as Get With The GuidelinesSM – Coronary Artery Disease hospitals for the second consecutive year.
“The recognition signifies that each of Tenet South Florida’s 14 acute care hospitals is participating in the American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines program,” said Tony Newbold, American Heart Association Affiliate Board Chairman. “The quality improvement initiative is designed to reduce the risk of recurrent heart attacks by helping hospital staff follow proven evidence-based guidelines and procedures while coronary patients are in their care.”
“Providing the highest quality patient care is the top priority for Tenet South Florida hospitals,” said Don S. Steigman, Senior Vice President of Tenet South Florida. “Once again, our hospitals have demonstrated their dedication to making their cardiac units among the best in the country by implementing the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines program. Following the AHA guidelines helps us accomplish this by making it easier for our professionals to improve the long-term outcome for cardiac patients.”
Under the program, coronary patients are started on aggressive risk reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, aspirin, ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers in the hospital and receive smoking cessation and weight management counseling and referrals for cardiac rehabilitation before being discharged. These standards of care are outlined in the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology secondary prevention guidelines for patients with coronary artery disease.
According to the American Heart Association, more than 450,000 people suffer recurrent heart attacks each year. Statistics also show that within six years after a heart attack, about 22 percent of men and 46 percent of women will be disabled with heart failure. Within one year of an attack, 25 percent of men and 38 percent of women will die. However, research indicates that when patients are discharged from the hospital on appropriate medications such as aspirin, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors and lipid-lowering medicines, a patient’s risk of a second event is reduced and lives are saved.
Get With The Guidelines is designed to help hospital staffs develop and implement a secondary prevention guideline process. The program includes quality-improvement measures such as care maps, discharge protocols, standing orders and measurement tools. Designed to be quick and efficient, these guideline tools enable Tenet South Florida’s 14 acute care hospitals to improve the quality of care they provide cardiac patients, save lives and ultimately, reduce health care costs by lowering the recurrence of heart attacks. Projections have shown that if the Get With The Guidelines–CAD program were implemented nationwide, more than 80,000 lives could be saved each year.
The American Heart Association program was developed with support from an unrestricted educational grant from Merck & Co., Inc., and is being implemented in hospitals around the country. For more information on Get With The Guidelines, visit www.americanheart.org/getwiththeguidelines.
Tenet South Florida hospitals include the number one rated hospital for cardiac services in Florida for 2004, as ranked by HealthGrades, a national healthcare quality company. Tenet South Florida hospitals that earned five-star rankings are Delray Medical Center, Florida Medical Center and Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center.
Tenet South Florida hospitals are Parkway Regional Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic Hospital, Coral Gables Hospital, Delray Medical Center, Florida Medical Center, Good Samaritan Medical Center, Hialeah Hospital, Hollywood Medical Center, North Ridge Medical Center, North Shore Medical Center, Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, Palmetto General Hospital, Pinecrest Rehabilitation Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center and West Boca Medical Center.

Florida Panthers Capture
2005 Stanley Cup of Business
Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal announced recently that the Florida Panthers have won the publication’s 2005 “Stanley Cup of Business.” The award was presented to the Panthers for their ability to create new business initiatives through a variety of outreach methods, which helped to continue to fortify the bonds with their fans during the NHL lockout. The SportsBusiness Journal is the leading national publication in the sports business industry.
“This is a tremendous honor for the Florida Panthers and Sunrise Sports & Entertainment,” said Chief Operating Officer Michael Yormark. “We take great pride in being recognized by such a prestigious publication and would like to thank the SportsBusiness Journal for this honor. We must acknowledge our incredible fans and business partners for their dedication and loyalty throughout the past year. They are the true reason why we have received this recognition. Many of our initiatives were developed from their suggestions and it is their passion that has made those ideas successfully come to fruition. Our staff has worked tirelessly to stay connected with our fans and to grow our entertainment business. This is a nice acknowledgement of those efforts.”
Criteria for the 2005 “Stanley Cup of Business” was based on detailed reports that all 30 clubs submitted to SportBusiness Journal outlining their marketing, sponsorship, community relations and other business efforts since the lockout began. The SportsBusiness Journal followed up with their own research, before assessing who would make the playoffs and advance to the finals. The Phoenix Coyotes were the other Stanley Cup finalists, while the St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins represented the other two teams that advanced to the Conference Finals.
“We felt that many NHL teams did a very good job of trying to make the best of a bad situation,” said Andy Bernstein from the SportsBusiness Journal. “The Panthers stood out because the club actually transformed its entire business in a way that will endure well beyond the lockout. The team’s executives actually seemed to have an enthusiasm about the opportunity this situation presented.”
Among the Panthers’ efforts that were cited were the creation of Sunrise Sports & Entertainment, the debut of a monthly publications Live On Stage Credentials and Unrestricted, the development of the Sinatra Theatre presented by Office Depot, the aggressive event programming of the Office Depot Center, the distribution of more than $100,000 to local charities, numerous youth hockey initiatives, the “Lock In during the Lockout” marketing campaign that retained more than 90 percent of season seat holders, free concerts and movies for season seat holders, Halloween suite-to-suite trick-or-treating, installation of new LED video boards, continued growth in corporate partnerships, numerous in-arena amenities and much more.
Sunrise Sports & Entertainment is the premier company of its kind in South Florida. Home to more than 165 events annually and the Florida Panthers Hockey Club, the Office Depot Center welcomes more than two million guests annually. The Office Depot Center will be debuting the new Sinatra Theatre presented by Office Depot this fall and is home of Live On Stage Credentials, a monthly South Florida entertainment magazine. Miami Children’s Museum Hosts Plant-a-Heart Event Commemorating Tsunami Disaster
On Sunday, June 26th, Miami Children’s Museum will host Plant-a-Heart, a commemorative event honoring the victims of last year’s devastating tsunami disaster. This will be a kickoff event for what will culminate in a heart planting ceremony on the first anniversary of the disaster in late December at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne.
During the kickoff event, families will have an opportunity to create their own hearts, participate in multicultural art activities representing the cultures of the people affected by the tsunami, and learn how they can participate in the culminating event in December. All proceeds will go to Save the Children to address the longer-term needs of these children, such as education and economic development. The event will take place from 3-6pm at the Museum, 980 MacArthur Causeway in Miami.
“The goal of this artistic intervention is to raise awareness for the children of the recent tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia,” said South Florida artist and organizer Rakel Bermie. “The campaign aims to encourage the general public and corporations honor the lives lost and more importantly lend emotional and financial support to the children left behind alone.”
The hearts symbolize life, love and a true connection to those who are suffering. Through a partnership with the Miami-Dade School District, Miami-Dade Parks & Recreation Department, Save the Children and PK Graphics. Plant-a-Heart will support the creation and planting of over 200,000 hearts to represent all those who perished that fateful day on the first anniversary of the event.

Developers of The Waves Las Olas
Host Demolition “Smash Bash”

Grab a mallet, a can of spray paint—oh—and don’t forget a paintball gun or two! For anyone with a grudge to bear or a little extra stress, The Waves “Smash Bash” was the hottest ticket in town.
So what was the impetus for all this aggression? The developers of The Waves Las Olas hosted the “Smash Bash” to mark the impending demolition of three single-story buildings that currently stand on the site where their striking, new, 21-story, landmark loft tower will rise.
“The sound of breaking glass was music to our ears because all this destruction means construction is coming soon. We wanted our purchasers and other special guests to celebrate the demolition of the existing buildings, which is scheduled to commence shortly. Our objective was to make the event a ‘smashing’ good time for everyone,” said Richard Schweitzer of The Waves LLC, who is co-developer of the nearly sold-out tower along with Jose Hermop of Hermop, Inc.
In preparation for the party, the developers retained an artist to embellish the doomed building with humorous caricatures that guests might enjoy defacing. Targets included Osama Ben Laden, Adolph Hitler, well-known politicos, Dr. Evil (Austin Powers), Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmations) and many more well-hated villains.
“As anticipated, our blue jean-clad guests got into the swing of things—literally—as they wielded sledgehammers, shot paintball guns and spray painted graffiti on the interior and exterior walls of our former office space,” Schweitzer noted. “By the time the evening ended, few walls and windows were left in tact. People really got into the demolition spirit.”
Outside, beneath a tent and along a portion of the street that had been cordoned off with barricades and plastic roadway cones, Dee Allen’s wait staff from A Gourmet Affair was clad in hardhats and other construction gear, as they served a wide array of delectable hors d’oeuvres, sweets and a selection of drinks. Tables, draped in burlap, were anchored with fake sticks dynamite and vases filled with floating nails and screws. Construction warning signs and other job site paraphernalia contributed to the fun of the evening, as did the lively DJ, Mr. Marc Vanen from Catalyst Media Solutions. Another evening highlight was a tongue-in-cheek audio-visual presentation—a kind of demolition music video—that was projected onto a huge screen in the middle of the street provided by Twilight Features, Inc. The video culminated with dramatic imagery of The Waves Las Olas tower rising out of the dust like a phoenix from an imploded building.
“Along with the fun of the theme, this was really another opportunity for our purchasers to get to know their future neighbors. And for future residents, the wild creativity involved in this event further confirmed the uniqueness of the new tower that they will call their new home,” Schweitzer concluded.
There are only a few opportunities left to purchase at The Waves Las Olas, including a few oversized, two-story lofts with industrial-style staircases leading to mezzanines. Priced from $648,000 to $696,000 these two-story residences will provide spectacular sunset views through walls of impact-resistant glass soaring 20-feet high. With three baths, they are spacious enough to accommodate three separate sleeping areas. These true loft spaces only have interior walls surrounding the bathrooms, kitchens and closets. Standard features include: polished concrete floors, porcelain tile floors in the baths and kitchens, with European cabinetry, stainless-steel appliances and stone countertops.
Amenities at The Waves will include a contemporary lobby with a 16’ saltwater aquarium, glass-walled Fitness Center, Zen Orchid Garden and a luxurious resort-style rooftop pool with a waterfall, spa, cabana shade area, steam room and sauna. There will also be approximately 3,000 square feet of commercial space, which will be occupied by the project’s developers and architectural firm. Satellite offices for various trades involved with the tower will initially occupy space there as well.
For information about purchasing residences at The Waves Las Olas, call Galleria Collection Marketing at 954-767-9147 or visit www.thewaveslasolas.com.
