The NFAA Celebrates an Affair of the Arts

by Marguerite Gil
Arts and Entertainment Writer

The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA) had their 25th anniversary gala celebration last weekend, and it was phenomenal. This generous arts organization opens their hearts and their checkbooks to support some of the world's most talented young people throughout the year. Students from nine disciplines (Dance, Film & Video, Jazz, Music, Photography, Theater, Voice, Writing and the Visual Arts) compete for hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships offered by the NFAA. The winners are all brought to Miami to share in a night of accolades and fun. This year's guests of honor were Michael Tilson Thomas and Vanessa Williams . Recent past Arison recipients have been Mikhail Baryshnikov , Maestro Placido Domingo , Roberta Guaspari , Jacques d'Amboise and Quincy Jones .

Vanessa Williams took the podium and said: ìThe arts make people's lives better. When I told my parents that I wanted to be an actor, dancer, singer, they gave me all of their support. There are a lot of people who don't have the opportunity, but this is a wonderful opportunity for these young people to not only discover their talents, but to learn, share and grow as an ensemble. The NFAA provides the fuel and the energy that allows them all to share their collective dreams and grow. I was a dreamer and these young people are dreamers. Thank you everyone here tonight for supporting all of these young and talented artists.î

Guests were treated to the most scrumptious finger foods and beverages. The entertainment was top-notch and everyone had a ball for a great cause.

Send your arts and entertainment events information to megs@gate.net .

Miami Produced by Emilio Estefan

Grammy Award-winning Miami resident Emilio Estefan will be executive producer of a star-studded celebration on October 5, 2006, that will launch Miami Performing Arts Center's highly anticipated, four-day Grand Opening. International superstar Gloria Estefan will take center stage (along with other celebrities to be announced shortly) for an all-star musical tribute to Miami that will highlight the many world-renowned artists who have played a major role in transforming the city into an arts and entertainment mecca.

The remainder of the Center's Grand Opening festivities, which will include more performances, parties, a gala, and many community events throughout October 6, 7, and 8, will be announced in the coming months.

"It is with great pride, passion and love for the city of Miami that I will produce the launch event for MPAC's grand opening,î said Emilio Estefan. ìGloria and I have had the honor of witnessing the growth and evolution Miami has experienced over the years and have shared with the world the cultural diversity and uniqueness that has made our hometown an international centerpiece for  arts and entertainment. The opening of MPAC will give Miami the opportunity to showcase the many talents that have risen from our great city."

ìEmilio and Gloria Estefan represent the creative energy that drives the city of Miami, and their names are synonymous with high-voltage entertainment,î stated Michael C. Hardy , president and chief executive officer of Miami Performing Arts Center. ìWe are very pleased that they are playing a central role in our grand opening. We could not celebrate our beautiful city, its abundance of talent, and the stunning diversity that gives it such worldwide appeal without them.î

As a producer, entrepreneur, songwriter and humanitarian, Emilio Estefan has been long recognized as a leading force in catalyzing the Latin music scene into a mainstream national phenomenon embracing the broader Latin culture. Recipient of 14 Grammy Awards, he has produced albums and helped shape the careers of Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and his wife Gloria Estefan, among many others.   Estefan's profile has steadily risen over the last decade: from founding the Miami Sound Machine to owning and operating local hotels and restaurants, from serving as co-publisher of Miami-based Ocean Drive en Español to receiving a star on the HollywooWalk of Fame in 2004.   Directing and producing an array of television specials and music videos, Estefan is also responsible for producing numerous special events, including the closing ceremonies for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics and various Super Bowl Halftime Shows. As a member of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, Estefan has produced many musical events at the White House.

Estefan will produce MPAC's inaugural evening in association with Fred Stein , who serves as executive producer of the entire Grand Opening from October 5-7. Deco Hats Off to Tony Goldman

By Marguerite Gil
Arts and Entertainment Writer

Art Deco Weekend recently took center stage. Starting off the three-day festivities, entrepreneur Tony Goldman received a lifetime achievement award from the City of Miami Beach in front of one of his hotels. Mr. Goldman wanted to commemorate the 18th anniversary of his Park Central Hotel (under Goldman Properties), on Ocean Drive, so he rolled back the room rates to $1.00 a night, (no it's not a typo), reflecting the prices offered in 1937 when the hotel was originally built. Look for monthly drawings throughout this year. Lucky winners will enjoy all of the hotel's amenities for just a buck. Deco Guests were treated to Champagne, hors d'oeuvres and costumed actors such as a Mae West look-a-like.

After the accolades, I asked Mr. Goldman to share his feelings about the recognition. Mr. Goldman said, ìTo receive the Medal of Honor from the city of Miami Beach is a great acknowledgement for the work that I've done here. It's an award and it's a great award, not only for myself, but for the improvement in the quality of life in the area and as the community improves, my asset values improve. I look at it in that order, first the community and then to my own enterprises. This [neighborhood] is a spectacular treasure, for me. All of this is a national treasure, to be in an area with this many quality buildings, and it's a privilege for us to be a part in saving it. There are millions of people who come to see all of this and I'm very gratified. It's good to be appreciated and I'm constantly stimulated by this work that I love where my family lives -- my son, my daughter, my wife. We're thrilled to be a part of it all.î

His wife Janet added, ìWhen he first came here, he was really excited and it [the area] was really in shambles and it was dangerous. There was no place to walk and he said to me, ëJanet, this is the American Riviera,' and I didn't see it at all.î

Tony Goldman continued, ìIt's exciting to see something and then commit yourself to actualize it. There's a fine line between vision and craziness. What's so important to visualize is an execution commitment; to actually see it through. It takes guts and it takes money, and unshakeable confidence to make it happen. This is my street and I love Ocean Drive. Every time I come here, I smile. Even today you're seeing thousands of people here at Art Deco Weekend. And the beauty of it is that you see every age group and different colors and different languages and people holding hands, boys holding boys' hands and girls holding girls' hands, it doesn't matter, it's all truly spectacular. How lucky I am to be here to participle and make it happen.î

We're all lucky to see someone like Tony Goldman realize his dreams, thus letting us all enjoy his visions.

Send your arts and events information for consideration to megs@gate.net .

Walk-A-Thon to Benefit South Floridians with Special Needs

South Floridians interested in assisting and empowering those with special needs are invited to participate in the 3rd Annual Walk for Special Needs . Taking place at Fort Lauderdale's Holiday Park, the walk benefits individuals through the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Foundation.

Scheduled for Sunday, January 29 at 1pm, the fundraiser features a three-mile walk, international food festival, raffle, and silent auction. There will also be guest appearances by a member of the Miami Dolphins, Marc Buoniconti of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and CBS-4's Ted Scouten , as well as entertainment for children and adults.

Proceeds from the event support individuals with mental and physical challenges stemming from blindness, deafness, Cerebral Palsy, Down's Syndrome, Spina Bifida, and other ailments. These people face unique challenges each day and rely on specialized equipment, which many of them can't afford, to lead more normal lives.

ìMany times insurance doesn't cover basic necessities, so what we provide helps make life more livable,î said Cathy Grossberg , event founder and mother of Matthew, a 28-year-old with Cerebral Palsy.  ìWheelchairs, handicapped toilets and shower chairs are some of the day-to-day items, but we've also provided specially-made bicycles to bring fun into people's lives.î

Nearly $70,000 was raised during the first two years of the walk, with all dollars donated to the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Foundation ( www.jdchf.org ). Walk-a-thon participants are expected to raise at least $25 in pledges. Disabled and children 12 and under can walk for free. Additional information, registration and sponsorship forms are available online at www.walkforspecialneeds.com

Those unable to participate in the walk-a-thon are encouraged to help improve lives with a tax-deductible donation. Make checks payable to: Walk for Special Needs and mail to Cathy Grossberg, 411 N. New River Drive E#306, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301.

Organ Donor Family and Restaurateurs Continue to Open
their Hearts and Support Charity Wine and Food Festival

Restaurant owners Ogbe and Felitia Guobadia gave the ultimate giftówhen 7-year-old daughter, Natasha , was killed in a car crash because of a drunk driver, they made the decision for Natasha to become an organ donor. They continue to reach out to the community by donating food from their restaurant, Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant , for Transplant Foundation's January 28th wine and food festival, Taste of the Tropics.

While they may have lost their daughter in 1993, the memory of Natasha lives in them and others each day. ìAt the hospital, we were told that while there was no hope of Natasha's survival, we had the opportunity to help other children to live,î recounted Felitia. ìI remembered thinking that if it were Natasha needing a life-saving transplant, I would be so thankful to the family who gave us that gift, so why not give life to someone else's child. Natasha always wanted to help others, and organ donation is the ultimate gift.î

Now, more than six years later, they want to reach out again to the transplant community and be a food vendor at Taste of the Tropics. Taste, Transplant Foundation's biggest fundraiser, will be held at Parrot Jungle Island and will take place from 6:30pm to midnight. Tickets are $85 pre-event and $100 onsite. Festivities include cocktail hour hosted by Marky's Caviar, live/silent auctions, music, dancing, limited raffle with $5,000 cash prize, and lots of food and drinks provided by 30 of South Florida's premier restaurants, like Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant.

ìGenerous food donations from our food and beverage vendors are paramount to the success of Taste of the Tropics,î stated Eli V. Compton , Executive Director of Transplant Foundation. ìOgbe and Felitia showed their compassion when, despite personal tragedy, they selflessly gave the gift of life to others. Their participation at Taste of the Tropics is just another glance into the character of these kindhearted souls.î

Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant is located in the Design District at 4029 N Miami Ave, Miami 33137. The first to bring Ethiopian cuisine to South Florida, Sheba also has a gift shop with a wonderful array of African art on exhibit. For details, visit www.shebamiami.com

Transplant Foundation, Inc., affiliated with the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami, is a 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to assisting transplant patients in need. Proceeds of Taste of the Tropics go toward fulfilling the mission of financially assisting patients, educating the community on the importance of organ donation and funding transplant research.

Groundhog Day on Hollywood Beach

Punxsutawney Phil may not be making a personal appearance, but Groundhog Day on Hollywood Beach promises to be a good time for a good cause.

The February 2nd festivities will begin with breakfast on the beach and a live radio hookup to Punxsutawney, Pa., where the world's most famous weather-forecasting groundhog will predict the end of winter around 7:30am.

Then the more daring Groundhog Day revelers will take a dip in the Atlantic Ocean, with pledges to benefit participants in the Hollywood Beach Junior Lifeguard program.

Groundhog Day on Hollywood Beach is the brainchild of Jeff Hansen , the publisher of Cahoots , a quarterly publication in Hollywood, and a longtime visitor to the annual Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney. Two years ago, Hansen formed the Hollywood Beach Bum Chapter of the Groundhog Punxsutawney Club. The local chapter has about 15 members, mostly Hollywood Beach lifeguards.

Hansen organized Hollywood Beach's debut Groundhog Day event as a fundraiser. The goal is to raise $600 to sponsor 10 young people in the city's weeklong junior lifeguard program this summer. Hansen is counting on pledges from the public, as well as support from event sponsors Ocean Alley restaurant, the Hollywood Beach Business Association and the local Groundhog Club chapter.

He already has secured commitments from at least 20 Hollywood Beach lifeguards to take the chilly morning plunge for pledges.

The day will begin with a buffet breakfast from 6:45 to 7:30am at Ocean Alley restaurant on the beach. The cost is $10, which includes a commemorative event T-shirt for ocean swim registrants. Festival-goers will be able to listen to the live radio broadcast from Punxsutawney.

Around 7:30am, that famous furry forecaster will emerge in search of his shadow and ìgive his prediction of six more weeks of winter or an early spring,î said Hansen. ìAbout 95 percent of the time, it's six more weeks of winter.î

Groundhog Day on Hollywood Beach will kick off at 6:45am, Thursday, February 2 at Ocean Alley, 900 N. Broadwalk. Reservations for the buffet breakfast are not necessary. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the city's junior lifeguard program. Hansen said pledges for the Groundhog Day dip in the ocean also will be gratefully accepted.

Debra Case , Ocean Alley owner and the president of the Hollywood Beach Business Association, said she was happy to get involved in the first annual event because it will help promote both the beach and the city's lifeguard program. Case said next year's festivities are expected to include some type of lifeguard training activities as part of the ocean swim.

For more information on Groundhog Day on Hollywood Beach, call Jeff Hansen at 954-929-9334.

Once again, Leading Ladies, auxiliary of the Transplant Foundation played host to over 225 zealous supporters. Decked in duds from ìdenim to diamonds and jewels to jeans,î everybody adorned himself or herself for the theme of the day. The exciting Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino opened its ballroom for the January luncheon and Show. Chairladies Diane Lapin and Donna Ross welcomed the guests in true fundraising tradition as they introduced President Nancy Sutton to offer greetings, and Liaison Candi Casino , to present the customary check to Transplant Foundation Executive Director, Eli Compton and President Paul Klein.

Dear friend and huge supporter of Leading Ladies, Carl Goldman , addressed the attendees with his emotionally motivating account of his life-saving liver transplant surgery. It is people like Carl who make Leading Ladies continue to strive toward the goal of transplantation awareness and patient service. One of the many highlights of the day occurred when he brought to the stage, his doctor who has become his friend, Jackson Memorial Medical Center's world-renowned Andreas Tzakis . The affectionate bond between the two was absolutely contagious!

After a delightful lunch and successful mini-auction, which was a pre-curser to the later-in-the-day raffle drawing of beautiful gifts secured mostly by the chairladies themselves and a very generous guest, Gregory Parker, the guests were entertained by concert artist Briam Casanova , who graciously stepped in for the under-the-weather scheduled entertainer.

Another smash hit for this smashing group of ladies and their friends! And still, another one is comingÖon Wednesday, February 22; world-famous comedian Norm Crosby will be the star attraction at a luncheon to be held at The Surf Club on Miami Beach. For reservations, please call Barbara Malament at 954-458-1240. For more information about this dynamic group, call President, Nancy Sutton at 305-937-2433. See you next month.

Walk Like an Egyptian

by Marguerite Gil
Arts and Entertainment Writer

The King Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs exhibit opened to overwhelming crowds and media frenzy in December at the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale.

ìPeople of all ages have an enduring connection and fascination for King Tut,î said Zahi Hawass , secretary general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities and director of the Giza and Saqqara Pyramids at a recent press conference. ìBow a new generation will discover the wonders of the pharaohs and ancient Egypt.î

During the last Tut exhibition back in 1976-1979, nearly eight million Americans viewed the rare artifacts at the sold-out tours, and that bothers Hawass somewhat. Not because of the attendance -- he is delighted that the ancient king is such a draw for curious onlookers -- but because Hawass feels that the money makers at each of the shows are the museums and not the department of Antiquities in Egypt. During the press conference, Hawass went on to passionately explain that, while museums around the world that show the artifacts and make substantial profits (from admission, souvenir shops, book sales, etc.), his beloved works of art are decaying because of lack of funds needed to keep them from the ravages of time. This is the reason that individual ticket prices range from $15 to $30 for viewing this outstanding show. A portion of the money made during this present American tour is slated to be set aside for conservation and reparation of many damaged archeological pieces.

Tutankhamun was one of the last kings of Egypt's 18th Dynasty and ruled during a crucial, turmoil-filled period of Egyptian history. The boy king died under mysterious circumstances in 1323 B.C., in the ninth year of his reign. He was probably only about 18 or 19 when he died.

The exhibition includes 50 of Tut's burial objects, as well as his royal diadem -- the gold crown discovered encircling the head of the kings mummified body that he likely wore as king, and one of the gold and precious stone inlaid canopic coffinettes that contained his mummified internal organs. The exhibition also includes more than 70 objects from tombs of other 18th Dynasty royals, as well as several non-royal individuals.

In my opinion, the price of admission may be a little hefty, but so well worth it if you, like me, are in love with anything connected with the ancient art of the upper and lower Nile valley. Think of it this wayÖit's cheaper than going to Egypt.

Broward Center for the Performing Arts to be Named Point
of Culture by Brazil's Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil

Minister of Culture of Brazil Gilberto Gil will sign an historic agreement naming the Broward Center for the Performing Arts as a Brazilian ìPoint of Cultureî in the United States. The Broward Center is the first performing arts center to have the distinction and will be formally recognized with institutions from Boston and San Francisco as the first three Brazilian Points of Culture in the U.S. during a public signing ceremony which will take place at the Broward Center at Monday, January 16 at 3pm.

Established by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Ministry of External Relations, ìCulture Points Abroadî is part of the Ministry's Living Culture Program. The program was conceived as an organic network of cultural creation and management which would be mediated by a collection of Points of Culture both in Brazil and abroad. The aim of the program is to provide access to appreciation, production and dissemination of culture so as to empower social and cultural forces to build new national values of cooperation and solidarity.

ìWe are both honored and humbled by this prestigious distinction,î said Broward Center President & CEO Mark Nerenhausen . ìThis honor is the result of ongoing collaboration between individuals, organizations and corporations. It is actually recognition for this community's efforts. We understand that such a designation carries with it an important responsibility to serve, not just the Brazilian community, but also the entire community. Our partnership with Brazil's Ministry of Culture will produce educational, cultural and economic benefits for the entire region.î

Representatives of ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco and Boston's Brazilian Cultural Center of New England will also sign the formal agreement to become Points of Culture during the ceremony at the Broward Center.

ABADÁ-Capoeira is a philanthropic organization that works to preserve, develop and diffuse capoeira art (pronounced ka-poo-eh-da) with integrity, using this art to enrich needy communities and the general public. As a pioneer in preserving and developing Brazilian culture in the region, ABADA-Capoeira serves 20,000 people annually.

The Brazilian Cultural Center of New England was selected as the result of programs it has developed for its local Brazilian community. The institution's proposal for the Point of Culture designation is the project, "Roots of Bahia: Cultural Encounter," that ties the promotion of Afro-Brazilian arts to social-economic programs of maintenance, recycling and improvement for Brazilian residents, especially for the low-income population, through scholarship awards.

The entire community is invited to attend the signing ceremony in the Broward Center's Peck Courtyard which will include diplomats and dignitaries as well as a champagne toast, the 15-member female vocal group Brazilian Voices singing the national anthems of both countries and a performance by Centro Cultural Afro Brasileiro of capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines dance, music, self-defense technique and acrobatics.

Cultural Forum

Earlier in the day, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce of Florida will present the open forum Building Cultural Bridges: The Diffusion of Brazilian Culture led by Minister Gil. Topics will include the Diffusion of Brazilian Culture, Cultural Exchange and the Points of Culture program. Joining Minister Gil for the forum will be dignitaries Ambassador João Almino, Consul General of Brazil in Miami; Ambassador Georges Lamaziere, Consul General of Brazil in San Francisco; Florida Secretary of State Sue Cobb; former United States Ambassador to Brazil Donna Hrinak; and Ministers Sergio Xavier and Celio Turino of Brazil's Ministry of Culture.   Points of Culture-USA program sponsors, TAM Brazilian Airlines and Caixa Economica Federal Bank, will also sign their agreement of support. The forum will take place on Monday, January 16 from 1:30 - 3pm in the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center.

Admission is free but pre-registration is required by calling 305-579-9030 or 954-965-1184 or by sending an e-mail to rsvp@browardcenter.org .

Brazil in America

January 17 - 19, Broward Center CEO and President Mark Nerenhausen will join Minister Gilberto Gil and Sergio Xavier , Secretary of Development & Incentives of the Ministry of Culture, at the 58th Annual Conference of the International Society for the Performing Arts in New York City as they unveil the " Brazil in America" program which seeks to promote Brazilian artists in the United States on the national stage. Directors of several North American performing arts centers will gather to learn more about this unique program which will promote cultural exchange between Brazil and the United States and will include a discussion on cultural investments, tax incentive laws, the Points of Culture network and the further development of the cultural economy. On January 23, the Brazil in America program will also be on the agenda at the Annual Conference of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters in New York City.

The Broward Center and Brazil

The winner of five consecutive Brazilian Press Awards for excellence in Brazilian programming and promoting a positive image of Brazil abroad, the Broward Center began its Brazilian cultural initiative in 2000 with the first annual Brazil Night concert and celebration. Artists who have appeared in the series include Milton Nascimento, Jorge Ben Jor, Toquinho, Joao Bosco, Rita Lee, Gal Costa, Dori Caymmi, Ivan Lins, Zelia Duncan, Alcione, Leila Pinheiro, Ed Motta and the band Batacoto.

Last spring, the Broward Center produced ìState to State, Business to Culture, Focus '05 Brazilî featuring the North American premiere of Jobim Sinfônico, presented in conjunction with a bi-national trade forum. In addition to São Paulo Governor Geraldo Alckmin's delegation, a high-ranking commission from Brazil's Ministry of Culture participated. The collaboration that followed eventually resulted in the Broward Center's designation as South Florida's Point of Culture.

Agassi Gets Wild Card for Delray Beach ITC Event

The Delray Beach International Tennis Championships snagged the biggest prize in its 14-year history when Andre Agassi requested a wild card to play in the ATP tournament, which will be held in the Delray Beach Tennis Center & Stadium January 30-February 5.

Agassi, the winner of eight Grand Slam titles and 60 ATP tournaments, will open his 2006 season--his 21st season in pro tennis--in Delray Beach.

ìWe're ecstatic that Andre is coming to Delray Beach,î said tournament director Mark Baron. ìThis is the first time in the last 14 years that circumstances have allowed him to play in this event. It's a great opportunity for South Florida fans to enjoy the incredible level at which he plays in a stadium as intimate as ours. He's such a wonderful personality.î

Agassi finished the 2005 season ranked No. 7 in the world. It was the 16th time in his career that he finished in the Top 10, tying him with Jimmy Connors for the top spot on that all-time list. America watched and cheered as the 35-year-old tennis icon made a spectacular run to the finals of the U.S. Open last fall with consecutive five-set wins over Xavier Malisse, James Blake and Robby Ginepri.

Agassi joins what arguably is already the best draw in Delray Beach ITC history, one that features Robby Ginepri , James Blake , seven-time ATP winner Tommy Haas and Olympic silver medalist Mardy Fish . Also entered are 2005 Delray Beach ITC champion Xavier Malisse and runner-up Jiri Novak , as well as Boca Raton's Vince Spadea , who finished No. 19 in the world in 2004. Ginepri and Blake finished the 2005 season No. 16 and No. 24, respectively, after their strong U.S. Open performances.

The Delray Beach ITC is the first of 15 ATP tournaments that will be held in the United States in 2006. Box seats, reserved series seats and individual session tickets to see Agassi and his fellow pros are on sale through YellowTennisBall.com (the official tournament website) or through the Delray Beach ITC Ticket Office (561-330-6000). Single session grandstand tickets range from $10 to $20 while box seats are $50 to $75. Championship packages that include preferred seating for all 11 sessions are $220 while the Weekender package (quarterfinals through finals) is $150. Box seat packages begin at $930 for two seats and range up to $2,000 for four premium courtside seats. Box seats include premier parking and an array of amenities.

Miami Will Host Largest Map Fair in the World at
the Historical Museum of Southern Florida February 4 and 5

Major map collectors wouldn't miss it, and first-timers will cure their curiosity at the Historical Museum of Southern Florida's Thirteenth Annual Miami International Map Fair to be held Saturday, February 4 and Sunday, February 5, 2006 at the downtown museum. The largest map fair in the world, the Miami International Map Fair will unite map dealers, collectors, hobbyists and aficionados from all four corners of the world for a weekend of buying, selling, and browsing. Map Fair proceeds will benefit the Historical Museum's exhibitions, educational programs and general advancement.

Over fifty prominent antique map dealers from England, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Germany, France, Australia, Argentina, Canada and the United States will participate in the fair. Antique maps from the fifteenth to the last century, ranging from around $100 to several thousand dollars, will be displayed and for sale. Those who are curious about the origin and historical value of their own maps are encouraged to bring one to the fair for an expert opinion from a professional map dealer.

ìMaps will draw many people for different reasons, everyone from scholars interested in their cartographic significance to interior designers looking to bring interest into their clients' homes,î says Historical Museum Map Fair Manager Marcia J. Kanner .

Miami is one of only five cities in the world to host a map fair; others are London, Paris, Breda (Holland) and Denver. ìWe are proud that this event is known and respected all over the world and that many new people have started collections because they visited the Historical Museum's Miami International Map Fair and liked what they saw,î adds Kanner.

Lake Worth, Florida map dealer Charlie Neuschafer of New World Maps, Inc. will have a 1606 hand colored, near mint condition Virginia/Florida map from the Mercator/ Hondius Atlas.  Daniel Crouch of the Shapero Gallery in London will be selling the largest terrestrial globe made by Willem Jansz Blaeu for $850,000. Martayan Lan of New York will be selling a lithographic view of the Florida peninsula and five other views as if from the perspective of a satellite, despite having been published at the beginning of the Civil War in 1861, for $30,000.

Map Fair weekend participants can learn from leading experts in the field. Dr. Matthew Edney , Director of the History of Cartography Project at the University of Wisconsin, will deliver the keynote address ìThe History of Cartography: A New Era, a New Vista,î on Saturday, February 4. Map scholar and dealer Thomas Suarez will give a lecture on the Solomon Islands, and James Flatness of the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress, will talk about resources available to the map collector.

Weekend participant registration includes the lectures, a box lunch on Saturday and Sunday, and a cocktail reception Saturday evening. On Friday evening, registrars can also enjoy an off-site cocktail reception and dinner party with dealers and collectors for an additional fee. Register early as space is limited.

General admission to the Map Fair is $10 for adults, $2 for children 6-12, free for children under 6 and museum members, and includes entrance to the international dealer's marketplace, access to an expert opinion on your own map and the opportunity to win door prizes.

ìMaps provide a sense of identity, of time and place,î says Miami International Map Fair founder and chairman Dr. Joseph H. Fitzgerald . In 1990, an anonymous donor established a trust in Dr. Fitzgerald's name as part of the Historical Museum's endowment. The Fitzgerald & Kanner Trust For Historic Maps, as it is now known, aims to support future Map Fairs, increase the museum's map collection, and foster an appreciation of historic maps through exhibitions, publications and educational programming.

For more information on the Map Fair, or to make a contribution to the trust, contact the Historical Museum of Southern Florida at 305-375-1492 or visit www.historical-museum.org

Seafood Festival to Celebrate Keys Fisherman and their Harvest

Since Key West's earliest settlement in the 1820s, the tiny island's cuisine has been based around the bounty of the sea. Clawless Florida lobster, yellowtail, sweet pink shrimp, grouper, stone crab claws and more -- all harvested by hardy commercial fishermen -- have become prized signature items on regional menus.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, the area's indigenous seafood, and the fishermen who have dedicated their careers to harvesting it, are to be celebrated during the Florida Keys Seafood Festival.

Presented by the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen's Association and the University of Florida/Monroe County Extension Service, the festival is to take place from 11am to 9pm at Key West's Bayview Park, located at Truman Avenue and Eisenhower Drive. Admission is free.

The family-friendly feast was conceived to showcase regional seafood and generate interest in the history and significance of the Keys' commercial fishing industry. The festival also calls attention to the needs of the many commercial fishermen whose boats and equipment were damaged during the 2005 hurricane season.

"Our goal is help people identify with everything that's great about the Keys, including our wonderful fresh seafood," said Ralph Boragine , executive director of the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen's Association.

The seafood festival's reasonably priced menu is to include fresh lobster, fish, stone crab claws and shrimp -- as well as savory conch chowder, conch fritters and conch salad. Soft drinks and beer also are to be available.

"The seafood is all going to be prepared by fishermen and their families, so a lot of personal pride will be incorporated into each dish," said Boragine.

In addition to fresh and local seafood, the festival is to include games for children and musical entertainment by local musicians and high school bands.
Vendors, nonprofit organizations and creators of marine art are to round out the event's attractions. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the Florida Bureau of Seafood and Aquaculture Marketing are slated to provide educational displays.

Proceeds from the festival are to benefit scholarships for Florida Keys high school students and the Florida Keys Commercial Fishermen's Association.

For more information, call the association at 305-619-0039. For lodging information in Key West, contact the Key West Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-LAST-KEY (800-527-8539), or visit the Keys Web site at www.fla-keys.com .

One Hot Night in Monte Carlo Casino
Event Held at Robb & Stucky Interiors

More Than 400 Guests Enjoyed
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Benefit

In December, honorary chairpersons Frank and Courtney Brogan welcomed more than 400 guests to Robb & Stucky Interiors for One Hot Night in Monte Carlo, an evening at the gaming tables that brought the elegant spirit of the casinos at Monte Carlo to life in Boca Raton.

For one spectacular Saturday evening, both levels of the exquisite, 80,000-square-foot Robb & Stucky Interiors showroom in Mizner Park were filled with the sights, sounds and attitude of Monte Carlo’s stately gaming establishments.

Presented by Robb & Stucky in conjunction with Bluegreen Corporation and Boca Raton magazine, the evening event dazzled guests with an abundant array of savory and sweet treats provided by Ruth’s Chris Steak House; spirits offered by Bacardi featuring its Bombay Sapphire, Dewar’s 12, Grey Goose, and M&R Prosecco brands; sensual entertainment provided by the jazz ensembles of Florida Atlantic University; and an array of popular gaming options, including baccarat, blackjack, roulette, craps, and more.

Net proceeds from the event went to benefit the research funding efforts of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Today, there are 18.2 million people with diabetes yet one-third of them are unaware that they have the disease. JDRF is dedicated to funding research to find a cure for juvenile (Type 1) diabetes, a chronic disease that strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of complications such as kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, adult blindness and non-traumatic amputations. Since its inception in 1970, JDRF has dedicated $900 million to diabetes research and education about research, making them the leading non-profit, non-government funder of Type 1 research worldwide, with at least 85 percent of is funds directly to its mission.

The evening’s festivities wrapped up with drawings for three spectacular casino prizes and an outstanding raffle item. The three prizes were: A five-day/four-night stay for two at the SuperClubs flagship Grand Lido Resort & Spa, an all-inclusive 4 Diamond resort in Negril, Jamaica; prize value: $2,500; an exquisite Lalique crystal vase: prize value: $700; a three-day/two-night stay for two at Big Cedar Lodge, a Bluegreen-managed resort property located in Missouri; prize value: $500.

And the evening’s popular raffle item was an all-inclusive four-day/three-night visit to the world-class Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, valued at an impressive $10,000. The winner’s party of four will enjoy exploring the many amenities of this lavish 2,800-acre resort that is nestled in the rollingcountryside of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s majestic Laurel Highlands. The trip includes round-trip airfare, shuttle service, overnight accommodations at Falling Rock, Nemacolin’s luxurious and hip Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired boutique hotel; all meals; four rounds of golf (including cart and range fees) on the resort’s Pete Dye signature course, Mystic Rock, a Shooting Academy excursion; a two-hour session for four at the Off-Road Driving Academy, featuring Nemacolin’s fleet of H1 and H2 Hummers®; an off-site trail ride at the resort’s Equestrian Center; and Gift Certificates redeemable at Nemacolin’s Retail Shoppes.

An outstanding event committee worked tirelessly throughout the past year to pull all event details together. These dedicated individuals include Teri Crane, Jennifer Davret, Ellen Devine, Lora Martin Hazelwood, John Maloney, Carey McKearan, Jennifer O’Flannery, Jeff Pipes, Diana Riser, Cynthia Sandler, Scott Sullivan, Esther Swann, Rocky Thompson, Anna Wellens, and many others.
