FILM AND VIDEO MAKERS NEEDED—The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is seeking film and video submissions for the sixth installment of Optic Nerve, the museum’s popular film and video showcase featuring the work of emerging South Florida artists and filmmakers. Submissions must be on VHS or DVD, no more than 8 minutes in length, and must include a copy of the artist’s resume, a brief description of the work, and a biographical statement. Submissions must also include the artist’s contact information, and will not be returned unless accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed return envelope. Tapes will be reviewed and selected by a jury of film and art professionals. The selected works will be screened at MOCA during Optic Nerve on Friday, July 23 at 8pm. POETS NEEDED—The International Library of Poetry has announced that $58,000 in prizes will be awarded this year in the International Open Poetry Contest. Poets from the Miami area, particularly beginners, are welcome to try to win their share of over 250 prizes. The deadline for the contest is May 31, 2004. The contest is open to everyone, and entry is free. TALENTED TEENS NEEDED—Hollywood Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts is announcing the “Greater Hollywood Stars Teen Search,” an amateur talent event for teens ages 13-19. Three categories of amateur competition for groups and individuals in Dance, Vocal and Instrumental will be showcased with auditions held at South Broward High School, 1901 N. Federal Hwy., Thursday, April 29 at 7pm, application deadline: April 26. Acts should not exceed four minutes and should not have more than 10 participants. Audition participation fee is $10 per person. TOUR GUIDES NEEDED—The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood seeks volunteer tour guides (also known as docents and junior docents). Docents and junior docents (who are ages 13-19) give tours of the Center’s gallery exhibitions to school groups and other organizations. They also participate in theme-based, interactive, hands-on visual and performing arts activities with the Center’s education department staff. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED—Bankers Life and Casualty Company, Kendall branch, seeks volunteers to help raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association during the first “Forget Me Not Days” in Miami, May 7-8. Volunteers will assist Bankers Life and Casualty Company agents and employees them collecting donations and distributing 50,000 forget-me-not seed packets in 48 hours on street corners throughout Miami. “Forget Me Not Days,” taking place in eight U.S. cities including Miami, encourage Americans to plant the flower seeds in honor of the estimated four million Americans suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
